The object of the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act - commenced on 1 July 2010) is to open government information to the public.

This Act and the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) focus on information sharing and a cultural change to a proactive approach to release of government information. The OIC website provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the right to information system.
