Key achievements in cancer control

Since our inception the Cancer Institute NSW has worked tirelessly with others in the NSW cancer sector to lessen the impact of cancer in the community.

Our key achievements in cancer control to date include:

Survival

  • A five-year cancer survival rate of more than 64 per cent (up from 61 per cent in 2001) which is on par with the best health systems in the world.

Prevention and early detection

  • A five percentage point drop in smoking prevalence since 2003 - from 22.3 per cent to 17.2 per cent. This equates to more than 180,000 fewer people smoking.
  • Anti-tobacco campaigns developed by the Cancer Institute NSW have been endorsed by the World Lung Foundation.
  • Cancer Institute NSW anti-tobacco campaigns have been broadcast in more than 10 other countries around the world including the United States, Canada, India and Russia
  • An additional 63,000 women in the target age group participated in BreastScreen NSW screening between 2005 and 2010.

Research

  • The Cancer Institute has invested more than $170 million in cancer research since 2004
  • A 75 per cent increase in the total amount of cancer research funding in NSW between 2004 and 2009
  • Since the inception of the Cancer Institute research funding program, NSW has increased its share of National Health and Medical Research cancer funds from 17 per cent of program and project expenditure in 2004 to 29 per cent in 2010. 
  • Double the number of participants in clinical trials (1,054 to 2,007) between 2004 and 2009 contributing to an improved evidence base for cancer therapies

Cancer services

  • A 32 per cent increase in access to multidisciplinary cancer teams in rural    and regional areas of the State ensuring cancer patients, regardless of where they are treated, receive the best possible care.

  • An additional 27 psychologist and social worker positions across the State, providing support and comfort to patients and families affected by cancer

Treatment and Care

  • Launched an innovative online tool 'eviQ' that gives health professionals the latest treatment information at the point of care. More than 11,000 health professionals, from various locations around the world are registered users of the 'eviQ' product.
  • eviQ has launched an Opioid Conversion Calculator which provides clinicians with an online tool to safely facilitate the rational conversions of one opioid regimen to an approximately equianalgesic dose of another.
