NSWOG Key Activities

Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Improve management of sarcomas by better co-ordination of data collection, clinical trial participation and tissue banking

A Cancer Institute NSW Field Officer will liaise with four key treatment sites in NSW and play an active role in the management of three key areas of importance; data collection, coordination of patients into clinical trials, and tissue banking.

Breast

State wide breast minimum dataset

A Cancer Institute NSW Field Officer will pilot the National Breast Cancer Centre state wide breast minimum dataset at Sydney South West Area Health Service.

Child and Adolescent

Improve medical and psychosocial care for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer

This project aims to collect and collate information about the geographical distribution of NSW Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancers, incidences, outcomes, referral patterns, clinical trial access and participation. Information will be gathered through data analysis, a high-level literature review and clinician on-line survey.

Improve psychosocial care for adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer

A Research Psychologist will work with two social workers to create a tool and document quality of life concerns for childhood cancer survivors, unmet support service needs, and preferences for support services in NSW.

Colorectal

Minimum dataset for pathology reporting of colorectal cancers
A Cancer Institute NSW Field Officer will pilot the minimum dataset for pathology reporting of colorectal cancers at South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary Therapies Review

A review of massage, exercise, diet and meditation as adjuvant therapies for cancer patients will be conducted with guidelines for practitioners and patients in the use of these therapies to be developed.

General Practice

Improve cancer screening participation rate

The Committee will provide advice on Cancer Institute NSW cervical and breast cancer screening publications and develop strategies to improve the screening participation rate across the state.

Cancer Genetics

Review of cancer genetics services in NSW
A review of cancer genetics services in NSW will be conducted to identify key trends and priority needs.

Gynaecological Oncology

Palliative care guidelines

A resource for all clinicians caring for women with gynaecological cancer will be developed.

Meeting the needs of rural gynaecological cancer patients

The committee will look at new ways to address both patient and clinician requirements in a rural setting.

Haematology Oncology

Infrastructure support for clinical trials in haematological malignancies in NSW
A Cancer Institute NSW Field Officer will be appointed to improve participation rate of NSW haematology patients in clinical trials, identify barriers to clinical trial participation and develop mechanisms to better enhance communication/coordination between clinical trial centres.

Head and Neck

Addressing the information needs of people with head and neck cancer
Collaborative project with The Cancer Council NSW to develop information resources for head and neck cancer patients and their carers.

Lung

Developing, promulgating and assessing treatment algorithms for the management of lung cancer in NSW
The aim of this project is to develop, circulate and assess the use of algorithms describing the management of lung cancer.

Melanoma

Melanoma recurrence in NSW

Collaborative project with Melanoma Institute Australia to collect state-wide recurrence data.

Neuro-oncology

Addressing the cognitive and behavioural sequelae of adults with brain tumour: trialling a Behavioural Consultancy Model

A Clinical Psychologist and Research Assistant will be engaged by the Liverpool Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit, to evaluate the efficacy of a behavioural consultancy model.

Palliative Care

NSW Specialist Palliative Care Services Review
A review will be undertaken alongside NSW Health to report on the current status of specialist palliative care services in NSW to assist with future planning and strategic development.

Pathology

Standardised Synoptic Pathology Reporting
The committee will work alongside tumour stream Oncology Groups to advise on the development of structured pathology reporting of cancers.

Patient Information and Support

Professional resource pack for new psycho-oncology clinicians
A resource pack for psychosocial health professionals will be developed to assist novice clinicians up-skill in psycho-oncology and will include professional development and evidence based clinical information.

Radiotherapy

NSW Radiotherapy Strategic Plan to 2011
The committee will provide advice on the Plan as developed by NSW Health.

Rural Oncology

NSW Rural Cancer Services Review
A review of cancer services in rural and remote New South Wales will be conducted to inform future strategic initiatives to improve access to services.

Upper GI

State wide survey of surgical treatment of oesophago-gastric and pancreatic cancer
A collaborative project with the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society to establish an internet based database for patients with upper gastrointestinal malignancy.

Urology

NSW strategic urology oncology plan and one year operational plan

A long term strategic plan for urology oncology will be developed and will result in measurable improvements in outcomes for patients with urological cancers including services and service development, basic and applied research, clinical trials workforce, training and supportive care.
