Professor Rob Sanson-Fisher AO B.Psych. M.Psych. PhD FAPS
Acting Chief Cancer Officer & CEO, Cancer Institute NSW
Laureate Professor of Health Behaviour, University of Newcastle
Laureate Professor Rob Sanson-Fisher has published more than 320 peer review research papers and 16 chapters in books and obtained numerous research grants from the NHMRC and other competitive funding agencies. He was the inaugural Director of the New South Wales Cancer Education Research Program whose research training and publications received national and international recognition and was designated a WHO Centre of Excellence. More recently he finished a term as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle. He has served as a consultant for the National Institute of Clinical Studies, CDC and NIH in the United States and national research groups in Canada and is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. In 2007 the University of Newcastle awarded him Laureate Professorship in recognition of his research leadership. In 2008 the University of Waterloo in Canada awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Science.
In January 2009 Prof Sanson-Fisher was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to improving public health outcomes through research and education in the areas of behavioural science, cancer control and indigenous health.
The Hon Morris Iemma BEc LLB
Chairperson of the Board of the Cancer Institute NSW
Mr Iemma served as a Member of Parliament in the NSW Legislative Assembly for 17 years 3 months from May 1991 until September 2008. He held a number of Ministerial portfolios including Premier, Treasurer, Minister for Health, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Minister for Public Works and Services, Minister for State Development and Minister Assisting the Premier on Citizenship. He has a BEc degree from the University of Sydney and an LLB from the University of Technology Sydney.
Dr Helen Zorbas MBBS FASBP MAICD
Dr Helen Zorbas is Director of the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC). She has been responsible for directing a number of key national projects and programs in evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, monitoring, service improvement and psychosocial support to improve cancer care. Dr Zorbas is a practicing breast physician and has a staff specialist appointment at the Rachel Foster Breast Clinic, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Current appointments include: member of the National Health Committee of the NHMRC for the period 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2009; and a member of the Cancer Screen NSW Advisory Committee.
Ms Jill Boehm OAM, RN, CM, C ORTH, M Mgt, FAICD
Ms Jill Boehm retired recently as the CEO of the Cancer Patients Assistance Society of NSW, which runs the Jean Colvin Hospital in Darling Point, a facility for patients travelling from rural areas to Sydney to receive cancer treatment. She has been instrumental in developing additional rural branches of the Society and improving communication links between head office and rural branches. Ms Boehm is a registered nurse and representative of the NSW Nurses Registration Board on Professional and Tribunal matters, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been appointed to the Board of The Cancer Council NSW. Ms Boehm was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2007 for service to the community through advocacy and support for people with cancer, their families and carers. Nominated for the NSW Women’s Honour Role in 2005 for role as CEO of CanAssist and as a member of the Steering Committee building the accommodation facility for cancer patients and their carers at Wagga Wagga NSW.
Ms Liza Carver BEc, LLB LLM
Ms Carver is a Partner in the law firm, Gilbert + Tobin, and is a Commissioner of the Australian Energy Market Commission. She is a former Non-Executive Director of RailCorp NSW, a former Non-Executive Director of the Rail Infrastructure Corporation, a former Non-Executive Director of State Rail Authority of NSW, a former Non-Executive Director of Rail Access Corporation and has served as an Associate Commissioner with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, a member of the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, and a member of the NSW Premier’s Council for Women between 1995 and 1999.
Dr Patrick Cregan MBBS, FRACS
Nepean Hospital Specialist Cancer Surgeon
Dr Cregan is a specialist surgeon with a major interest in breast, endocrine & endoscopic surgery based at Nepean Hospital. He has a particular interest in surgical robotics, having performed Australia's first and the world's sixth Telesurgical procedure.
Other interests include research interest in mathematical modelling of cancer, patient communication and the application of advanced technologies.
Dr Cregan has served on a number of committees/boards including the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, Wentworth Area Health Service, NSW Health Clinical Council and the Australasian Medical Simulation Society. Dr Cregan is currently the Chairman of the Board of a private Medical Technology and Research Company, Medicvision.
Professor Peter Gunning BSc(Hons), PhD
Professor Peter Gunning is the Head of the Oncology Research Unit in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of New South Wales. His research is focussed on the development of new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of childhood cancer. These strategies target the skeleton of the cancer cell and build on the principles of cell architecture that Professor Gunning's group has discovered over the last 20 years. Professor Gunning has published over 100 primary research articles and has recently edited the first book devoted to his field of research. Previous appointments have included leadership roles as Chair of the Division of Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Chair of the Westmead Research Hub Executive and Chair, Board of Bio-Link, a company established by the NSW Government to support commercialisation of biomedical intellectual property.
Dr Paul Moy BA (Hons-Ec), Dip Ed, PhD(Ec)
Managing Director, UBS Global Asset Management
Dr Moy is a senior executive with UBS Global Asset Management and has extensive experience in investment banking, the energy, transport and utility industries. He is a former Executive Director of UBS Warburg, Deputy Secretary - NSW Treasury, a former Chairman of the Innovation Investment Fund, a former Director of Western Power Corporation, the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service, the State Rail Authority of NSW, Railcorp, and the Diversified Utility and Energy Trust (DUET) and Transgrid Corporation. He is also a former Member of the National Competition Council and Australian Statistics Advisory Council.
Currently Dr Moy is a director of Centennial Coal and Chairman of Austral Coal.
Prof John Simes BSc, MBBS, VQE, SM, FRACP, MD
Director, NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, University of Sydney
Professor Simes is a Senior Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Sydney; Medical Oncologist, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; Board Member and Coordinating Statistician, ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Group Incorporated; and Board member, Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trial Group Incorporated.
He participates in a wide range of scientific committees including: Medicare Services Advisory Committee; Project Grants Committee, NHMRC, and the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study Steering Committee.
Mr John Stubbs BA Dip Acct
Mr Stubbs is the Executive Officer of Cancer Voices Australia and Manager of the NSW Bone Marrow Transplant Network. Mr Stubbs is a survivor of Leukaemia and an active representative of cancer consumers. He has served on the ANZ Clinical Trials Advisory Committee, the Radiation Oncology Jurisdictional Implementation Group (ROJIG) and the Therapeutic Goods Committee under the Department of Health and Ageing and the Australian Leukaemia Lymphoma Group Clinical Trials Data Monitoring Committee. He has also served on the Complementary Therapies Committee of the Cancer Institute NSW.
Ms Lucy Turnbull LLB MBA
Ms Turnbull was Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney from 2003 to 2004 and Deputy Lord Mayor from 1999 to 2003. She served as an Administrator of Tweed Shire Council until the Council elections in September 2008. She currently chairs a number of companies, both private and public, including WebCentral Group Limited, and Pengana Holdings Limited. She is a former chair of the NSW Government’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and also served on the NSW Government’s Information Industry Business Advisory Board. She has served as a Director of the Sydney Cancer Foundation and as president of the Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. She is currently a Board member of the Waterloo Redfern Authority.
