‘Change is in the Air’ Campaign

On 12 October 2004, Cabinet approval was given to amend the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 to phase out smoking in indoor licensed areas by July 2007. It was agreed that three yearly phases would precede the introduction of a total ban to allow licensed venues sufficient time to address any practical issues they may have in implementing the new measures. The smoke-free law is an essential step towards cancer prevention that is supported by the majority of the public - both smokers and non-smokers. The final phase came into effect on 2 July 2007 - A ll indoor areas of New South Wales pubs, clubs, nightclubs and the casino are now smoke free .

2006 evaluation results of the campaign revealed that:

  • Around 70% of people approve the government legislation to prohibit smoking inside licensed areas.
  • Around two-thirds of people in NSW indicated that a complete ban would make no difference in how often they visit a licensed area.

Results from the New South Wales Population Health Survey 2005 reported that approximately 35.2% of adults would be more likely to frequent hotels and licensed premises if there was a total smoking ban. This proportion has increased significantly from 24.2% in 2003 to 35.2% in 2005.

To ensure that the people of NSW were aware of these changes, the Cancer Institute NSW and the NSW Department of Health developed the Change is in the Air Campaign. The television commercials that correspond to each of the phases can be downloaded below.
