NSW Oncology Group: Complementary Therapies
NSWOG Complementary Therapies was established in July 2006, with the objective to provide evidence-based information for people with cancer and their health professionals on the use of complementary therapies in treatment of cancer, alleviation of side effects of conventional cancer treatment and improvement in quality of life. Group members include complementary therapists, researchers, conventional health professionals and community representatives. Chair, Professor Stephen Clarke guides activity in the context of the best evidence, information and world’s best practice.
Key activities of NSWOG Complementary Therapies
- Complementary Therapies Access Review
A Complementary Therapies Access Review was undertaken by the Cancer Institute NSW in 2005 to determine those complementary therapies currently offered to people with cancer through NSW Area Health Services.

- Resource Development with the Cancer Council NSW
The Cancer Institute NSW assisted the Cancer Council NSW in the production of its Understanding Complementary Therapies booklet.
Included in this booklet, NSWOG Complementary Therapies initiated the development of a Complementary Therapy Question Prompt List, designed to help patients and their families make decisions on appropriate complementary therapies, through targeted questions to their health professional.
