A/Prof Richard Chye was trained initially in a medical oncology before changing his career to palliative care. He completed training in 1993 and then spent a year in Oxford, United Kingdom researching the interface between palliative care and aged care. He became Staff Specialist in Palliative Medicine at Prince of Wales Hospital in 1995. He became Director of Palliative Care at Prince of Wales Hospital in 1997. He was also appointed to Sacred Heart Hospice in 1995. He became Area Director of Palliative Care, covering Prince of Wales Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospice in 1998. He therefore directs palliative care services (teaching hospital consultations, community palliative care and inpatient hospice services) for a population of 350,000 across two teaching university hospitals in Eastern Sydney. He was appointed conjoint lecturer at the University of New South Wales in 1995. He was promoted to Conjoint Associate Professor in Medicine in 2004. He has been involved with the integration and enhancement of palliative care teaching in the new medical curriculum of the University of New South Wales. He is currently developing academic and research capacity in palliative care at the University of NSW and Notre Dame University, in concert with the Cancer Institute NSW.
