NSW Oncology Group: Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma

NSWOG Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma, a small specialised Group of clinicians, was established by the Cancer Institute NSW in May 2006. It is chaired by Professor Philip Crowe, Professor of Surgery, Prince of Wales Hospital and has a strong clinical membership. Due to the specialist nature of this field, the Group have actively pursued a data focus, with the aim of creating a national database. The Group seek to ensure that treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcoma is conducted within specialist treatment centres through communicating with referring GP’s. Treatment activity outside these centres has been monitored.

Key activities of NSWOG Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma:

  1. NSWOG Priority Project: Improved management of sarcomas by better coordination of data collection, clinical trial participation and tissue banking.

In 2007, the Cancer Institute NSW supported a project defined by each invited NSWOG as the priority activity to improving cancer care and control in their clinical area. The selected project was supported by the NSWOG membership, aligned to the Terms of Reference of the Group.

A priority need for the improved management of sarcoma in NSW was identified by NSWOG Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma as their priority project. The Cancer Institute NSW engaged a field officer to cover three key areas of importance: data collection, coordination of patients into clinical trials, and tissue banking.
