NSW Oncology Group: Colorectal
NSWOG Colorectal was established in December 2005 and has multidisciplinary representation from across the health spectrum, including consumers. The committee focus has been on data and pathology reporting, as well as screening. The Group is chaired by Dr Tony Eyers, Head of Department, Colorectal Surgery, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Key activities of NSWOG Colorectal:
- NSWOG Priority Project: Minimum dataset for pathology reporting of colorectal cancers
In 2007, the Cancer Institute NSW supported a project defined by each invited NSWOG as the priority activity to improving cancer care and control in their clinical area. The selected project was supported by the NSWOG membership, aligned to the Terms of Reference of the Group.
NSWOG Colorectal identified the need for standardised surgical and pathological reporting of colorectal cancers, to improve the quality of reports and aid decision making processes regarding adjuvant therapy. A colorectal cancer dataset extension was developed by NSWOG Colorectal, in collaboration with the Colorectal Cancer Research Consortium Minimum Dataset. The Cancer Institute NSW employed a data manager to pilot the minimum dataset for pathology reporting of colorectal cancers at South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service (SESIAHS).

- NSWOG Colorectal Minimum Data Set Extension Data Dictionary
NSWOG Colorectal has identified succinct dataset extensions as statewide standards to complement the core dataset with additional measures and indicators specific to tumour streams.

- Synoptic Pathology Reporting:
NSWOG Colorectal was among the four tumour stream NSWOGs that identified structured pathology as a high priority for improving clinical decision support. Collaborative projects have been established in this area, and more information is available on the Structured Pathology Reporting page of the Cancer Institute NSW site.
