NSW Oncology Group: Melanoma

Dr of Surgical Oncology, Westmead Hospital
In 2000 Dr Michael Hughes established the Surgical Oncology Service at Westmead Hospital which manages the treatment of melanoma, sarcoma and advanced/high risk non-melanoma skin cancer through the Westmead Cancer Care Centre. The Service currently consists of two consultant positions, a clinical nurse consultant and a permanently funded surgical oncology fellow.
Dr Hughes’ background is as follows:
- Graduated from the University of Sydney in 1989 with first class honours.
- Completed residency and advanced general surgical training at Westmead in Hospital in 1996 and while Surgical superintendent at Westmead he developed his interest in Surgical Oncology.
- Completed a Fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London in 1999 and was appointed to the Sydney Melanoma Unit at RPAH in 1999.
- In 2000 he returned to Westmead to establish the Surgical Oncology Service.
Dr Hughes manages a private practice, Northern Surgical Oncology, at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga which includes the treatment of breast cancer. Michael is Chairman of the hospital’s Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer team.
Dr Hughes is also Deputy Chairman of the NSW Melanoma Network Advisory Board and member of Network’s data committee. He sits on the Cancer Institutes Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Oncology Group as well as the Executive Committee of NSW Oncology Groups. .
