HPV Vaccine and the need to continue Pap tests

The first cervical cancer vaccine is now available in Australia. The vaccine protects women against cancer and cervical warts caused by four strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). It does not, however, provide protection against all types of cancer caused by HPV. Evidence shows that the maximum benefits of vaccination occur when used in young girls and women.

In November 2006, the Australian Government announced funding for the HPV vaccination program to commence in 2007, for Australian girls and women aged 12 to 26 years.

From April 2007, the vaccine will be funded on an ongoing basis under the National Immunisation Program for 12 and 13 year old girls through school based programs.

The Australian Government will also fund a two year catch up program, commencing in 2007 for 13 to 18 year old girls through school based programs and 18 to 26 year old women to be delivered through general practice and community based programs.

The vaccine is an additional method of preventing cervical cancer. It is not a substitute for a Pap test. Medical authorities urge all women aged 18-69 years to continue with regular two yearly Pap test screening.

The use of Pap tests has reduced death rates from cervical cancer by 52% in the last decade. To combat cervical cancer, Pap test screening needs to continue.
