NSW Cancer Plan 2007-2010 – Accelerating the Control of Cancer

Cancer results in NSW are equivalent to the best in the world. This important achievement is the result of the hard work and dedication of many thousands of health professionals providing care and expertise to all aspects of cancer control in NSW. It reflects the efforts of the public in participating in early detection programs or responding to cancer avoidance messages. It also reflects the trust and patience that cancer patients and their carers have in often difficult cancer treatment.

The first State cancer plan, the NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006, provided a solid foundation for the ongoing control of cancer in NSW. Many of the programs in the first NSW Cancer Plan will continue and be further expanded in the second NSW Cancer Plan.

In 2006 we are not preventing enough cancer and we must improve our ability to detect cancer earlier in a wider range of cancers. There are too many cancer deaths although cancer death rates continue to fall. These remain the key challenges for the second NSW Cancer Plan.

Priority areas

The NSW Cancer Plan 2007-2010 will focus on five high priorities most likely to improve cancer results.

These are:

Priority #2 Detecting cancer early

Priority #3 Improving cancer services and professional education

Priority #4 Accelerating improvement through research

Priority #5 Relevant data and information

These priorities will be addressed by networking expertise and by collective action.

NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006 – Lessening the Impact of Cancer: A Two Year Progress Report

Achievements of the first NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006 are detailed in NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006 Lessening the Impact of Cancer: A Two Year Progress Report . The NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006 delivered a comprehensive range of new programs in cancer prevention, cancer screening and early detection, health services, education and training, cancer research and cancer information. The impact of these new programs is now being felt across NSW.

NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006

The NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006, launched in July 2004, included programs aimed at reducing cancer incidence and providing better, smarter models of care for the large numbers of cancer patients expected in future years. While the Cancer Institute NSW had primary responsibility for the Cancer Plan, its benefits reflect the cooperation and work of NSW Health, Area Health Services and all stakeholders. The programs now established by the NSW Cancer Plan 2004-2006 are designed to substantially increase the chances of avoiding or surviving cancer. The Cancer Institute NSW has predicted that by 2011, two-thirds of cancer patients will be cancer survivors.
