NSW Pap Test Register
Information for Women
What can the NSW Pap Test Register do for you?
The Register is a health safety net that:
- reminds you when your Pap test is overdue.
- keeps a record of all your previous tests so that your doctor or nurse has access to your past test results. Doctors and nurses can use past test results to recommend further tests or treatments to meet your needs.
The Register operates an Information Line 1800 671 693 (toll free) where you can call if you require further information about the Register or would like to update your details.

What information is recorded on the Register?
- Details such as name, address, date of birth and the result of the Pap test or other related follow-up tests
- Details of the doctor or nurse who took the test
- The date of the test and the name of the laboratory that processed it
- The results of Pap test and cervical histology tests
If you choose not to join the Register, your name and address are not recorded, however your date of birth and Pap test result are collected for statistical purposes to fully understand the impact of screening.
How is the confidentiality of your information maintained?
Legislation governing the operation of the Register specifies that your identifying details may only be released to you, your doctor or nurse and the laboratory engaged on your behalf. Release of information to other persons would only be with your written consent. The only exception to this rule arises if the Register is served with a court order or subpoena for release of information.
The data from the Register may be released for research purposes in a de-identified form, which means that you will not be identified.
How do women join the Register?
Joining the Register is simple and the choice is always yours.
When you go for a Pap test or cervical biopsy, your name, address, date of birth and the results of your test will automatically be sent to the Register unless you choose to "opt off" at the time the test is being taken. You will be sent a 'Welcome' letter the first time we receive your personal details so that you know that you have joined the Register.
What to do if you do not want to join the Register?
If you do not want to be included on the Register, just tell your doctor or nurse every time you have a test and ask them to mark your test clearly "not for Pap Test Register".
Being included on the Register is voluntary and provides significant benefits to women and health practitioners. However, you can withdraw your name and address from the Register at any time by making a request to the Register in writing.
What to do if your details change?
Please inform the Register if you move house or change your name. This will help us to keep an accurate test history for you. It will also help if we need to send you a follow-up or reminder letter.
There are several ways for you to update your details with the Register:
- By phoning our Information Line on 1800 671 693
- By faxing or posting this Change of Name or Address form
