Two world-renowned experts headlined the fourth annual brain tumour support and education forum in Sydney on May 10.

International guest speakers Dr.
Patrick Wen, Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and
Director of Neuro-Oncology at the Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's
Cancer Centre, Boston and Professor Paul Kleihues, Professor of
Neuropathy in Switzerland joined local experts, including Dr
Charlie Teo and Dr Helen Wheeler as guest speakers for an
informative forum day in support of Brain Tumour patients and their
carers.
The Cancer Institute NSW hosted the annual event at The Menzies
Hotel, Sydney on Thursday, 10th May 2012 which coincided
with Brain Cancer Action Week. The forum, which was streamed live
on the Cancer Institute NSW website, addressed a range of topics
including Diagnosis and Treatments, Accepting Diagnosis and
Wellbeing, Rehabilitation and Practical Help.

Current Treatments for Glioma

Professor Maria Kangas, Psychologist, analyses the effects
cancer can have on a patient's mental health and tells how patients
can maintain a psychological balance to better deal with their
physical symptoms.

Mindfulness
 |
Psychiatrist, Dr Mark Ryan discusses the use of Mindfulness
in our every day lives and how being aware and staying in a
positive mind frame is a healthy adjustment for cancer patients,
carers and anyone dealing with stress and anxiety. Dr Ryan also
puts his mindfulness computer software to the test using chair,
Matt Pitt to demonstrate.

Brain Tumours and Driving

Driving is a part of everyday life, however when is it no
longer an option for cancer patients and survivors? Prof Andrew
Cole, Chief Medical Officer of Hammond Care and Senior Consultant
of Rehabilitation Medicine, gives a presentation on the in's and
out's of driving with cancer.

Nutrition and Cancer

Merran Findlay, Dietitian, gives practical tips on eating
well when dealing with cancer. Although a very difficult thing,
Merran explains the best ways to approach food options and reminds
patients that eating is an important part of one's social
life.
