The Cancer Institute NSW hosted the Lung Cancer Forum in November 2007 to identify opportunities to improve the provision of healthcare delivery to patients with lung cancer. It consisted of a series of hypothetical case studies with discussion by a panel of multidisciplinary experts covering all aspects of professional cancer care.

Former Professor Jim Bishop provides an overview analysis of the statistical trends in Lung Cancer in NSW (2007) and discusses strategies to improve outcomes.

Kathy Pearson is a 60 year old grandmother who works three days a week and has a history of mild blood pressure.  She is suffering from a persistent common cough which has not improved after an initial round of antibiotics.

Further investigation shows an inflammatory lung condition plaguing the patient and all treatments are not improving her condition. The panel discusses other possible causes.

Kathy has shown symptoms of Haemoptysis which is an indicator for possible malignancy. Her GP now takes the next step for diagnoses by referring her to a specialist who identifies the main tests that now need to be undertaken.

Further Analysis of Mrs Pearson's condition reveals certain patterns and indicators which lead to an index of suspicion. It is now up to the Doctors to keep the patient engaged and reach her expectations.

The panel and audience discuss when is the appropriate time to involve a multi-disciplinary team and how long before action is taken. Kathy's situation has worsened and she needs to visit a Respiratory Physician.

The Lung Cancer debate continues with a discussion on closing the gap, for patients, between diagnosis and treatment with curative intent.

Multidisciplinary team members discuss their role in the Lung Cancer journey and their involvement in the palliative care stage.
