Cancer Institute NSW funded researchers have been recognised as leaders in their fields with the announcement of the latest round of Fellowship grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

The highly competitive and sought after Fellowships, announced by The Hon Mark Butler, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, allow the nation's foremost health and medical professionals to develop their research careers.

The Cancer Institute NSW is a proud supporter of cancer research and is responsible for more than 27 per cent of all reported cancer research funding in NSW.

Eleven researchers who have received career support funding by the Cancer Institute NSW were awarded NHMRC fellowships.

Director of Research at the Cancer Institute NSW, Dr Peter Wejbora, said the NHMRC grants will enable the successful researchers to continue their careers contributing to the health of Australians.

"Cancer research is vital to improve health outcomes for Australians.

"NSW is home to some brilliant cancer researchers and projects that are providing us with the evidence we need to drive rapid improvement in cancer prevention, treatment and ultimately survival outcomes.

"The recognition of 11 of our grant recipients shows that the Cancer Institute's career support program is succeeding in making our researchers competitive on a national level."

The Cancer Institute NSW is a proud supporter of cancer research and is responsible for more than 27 per cent of all reported cancer research funding in NSW.

Since 2004 the organisation has invested more than $170 million in research projects that have the potential to lead to better treatment, diagnosis and ultimately survival outcomes for cancer patients in NSW.
