A clinical trial is a research study that tests new treatment options and approaches.

These types of research studies can be used to test approaches to prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment for different diseases.

Clinical trials in cancer can either treat the cancer directly or treat symptoms and improve quality of life. Between 2004 and 2009 there were double the number of people enrolled in clinical trials in NSW (1,054 to 2,007), which is contributing to an improved evidence base for cancer therapies.

There are a number of websites that provide useful, plain English information for people with cancer and their families on clinical trials, such as the Cancer Council NSW and Australian Cancer Trials. We also have frequently asked questions about clinical trials.

Please note this information is designed as a guide only. If you would like more information on clinical trials and other treatment options, this should be discussed with your doctor.
