In 2010, the Cancer Institute NSW continued to work with key stakeholders across the NSW health system and core organisations in the cancer community to meet patient needs, use evidence to drive system improvement and create new knowledge to improve cancer outcomes.

Major achievements over this period can be categorised into four key program areas in the Cancer Plan 2007-10: Better Coordination of Care, Skilled Cancer Professionals, Smarter Models of Care and Comprehensive Patient Support.

These achievements include:

  • Measuring the impact of cancer nurse coordinator funding across NSW.
  • Building a system of clinical performance monitoring to minimise variation and improve outcomes for cancer patients.
  • Improving the quality of cancer services for patients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
  • Our online point of care treatment information site, eviQ being adopted by all Australian states and used by more than 87 countries worldwide.
  • Five clinical cancer forums, supporting professional development and education for almost 600 participants across Australia.

This report is a summary of these key achievements and also features how the Cancer Institute NSW has sought to engage with consumers across all our programs throughout 2010 to improve cancer care, treatment and survival.

These key achievements will set a platform for the new Division of Cancer Services and Information, under the leadership of Professor Sanchia Aranda, to work towards achieving the full potential of the NSW Cancer Plan 2011-15.
