Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer in NSW

In the past decade, the incidence of cancer in Adolescent and Young Adults (AYA) has increased. However, survival for this cohort of patients has shown small improvement in comparison to the advance in childhood and adult cancers.

The issue of Adolescent and Young Adult care has been on the National agenda since the 2005 Senate Committee's Inquiry that recommended a review of cancer care for adolescents and young adults. In May 2008, the Commonwealth announced provision of $15 million dollars over three years to CanTeen to establish AYA cancer centres in mainland states.

The Cancer Institute NSW, NSW Oncology Group (NSWOG) Child and Adolescent identified adolescent and young adult cancer as a priority area. The Adolescent and Young Adult Subcommittee was established with the specific brief of developing an in-depth understanding of the current treatment of AYA with cancer in NSW
