In the past decade, the incidence of cancer in adolescents and young adults (AYA) has increased. However, survival for this group of patients has shown small improvement in comparison to the advance in childhood and adult cancers.

The issue of adolescent and young adult care has been on the national agenda since a 2005 Australian Senate Community Affairs References Committee inquiry that recommended a review of cancer care for adolescents and young adults.1 In May 2008, the Commonwealth Government announced provision of $15 million dollars over three years to CanTeen to establish AYA cancer centres in mainland states.
