Smoking, alcohol use and poor diet leading to increased weight and obesity are established as the most important causes of cancer in high-income countries.

In line with the NSW Cancer Plan 2007-2010 this research program aimed to broaden understanding of the behaviours, intentions, knowledge and attitudes of the population in regards to lifestyle factors influencing the individual's cancer risk (excluding tobacco).

The monograph consists of three sections with the following objectives:

  1. To provide a thorough overview of the existing evidence around lifestyle factors and cancer, particularly with respect to the following areas:
    • Overweight/obesity
    • Physical Activity
    • Diet
    • Alcohol consumption
    • Sun exposure
  2. To present the findings of quantitative research resulting from the Cancer Institute NSW's first Lifestyle and Cancer Survey conducted in November 2006.
  3. To present the results of qualitative research on physical activity and cancer conducted in March 2007, commissioned with the aim of exploring opportunities for program development arising from the Lifestyle and Cancer Survey.
