There was a very small increase in incidence of liver cancer between 1972 and 1984. However, the increase has been much more rapid since 1985.

Although the incidence of liver cancer is relatively low in Australia compared to other regions of the world, the incidence has increased throughout the past two decades. In New South Wales, liver cancer accounted for 1.4% of all new cases of cancer in males and 0.9% in females in 2005. The incidence of liver cancer has seen a very small increase in males and females during the period 1972 to 1984. The increase has been much more rapid in both sexes since 1985. The age-standardised incidence rates have increased by 64% in males and 133% in females between 1996 and 2005. Liver cancer accounted for 2.8% of all cancer deaths in males and 1.7% females in 2005. The mortality in males was more than twice the rate it was in females.
