In 2007, the Cancer Institute NSW, in collaboration with NSW Health, undertook the inaugural statewide cancer patient survey to better understand patient experiences with cancer services and address unmet needs. The survey, developed by NRC+Picker, measured patient satisfaction across eight dimensions of care.

In 2008, the Cancer Institute NSW repeated the survey. About 8,500 surveys were mailed and 587 cancer inpatients and 3780 cancer outpatients participated (response rate of 53.2%).
