Clinical trials research is essential in the development of new and improved treatment options for patients, providing the link between basic research and clinical practice. Many of the improvements expected in cancer outcomes will be the direct impact of high-quality clinical trials that test innovative new treatments and approaches.

The Cancer Institute NSW does not conduct clinical trials. However, we do support them by providing the funding for resources, infrastructure and personnel needed to conduct clinical trials at research institutions throughout NSW. We offer grants to employ cancer trials nurses and data managers in trial units across the State, in collaboration with the Cancer Council NSW.

We also keep an up-to-date database of active trials across the State so that patients and clinicians can find out where relevant trials are taking place.

Our aim is to:

  • develop high quality cancer clinical trials in NSW
  • introduce and study new cancer treatments
  • increase participation rates in cancer trials
  • promote a culture of research and innovation in cancer services.

This is being achieved through the implementation of various partnerships, grants, collaborations and infrastructure, which have been consolidated under the NSW Cancer Trials Network. We are seeing a real difference since we started our work in 2004, with double the numbers of participants in clinical trials (1,054 to 2,007) between 2004 and 2009.
