The Cancer Institute NSW is a proud supporter of cancer research in NSW. Since 2003, we have committed more than $170 million to programs aimed at enhancing research capacity in NSW, including career development, infrastructure support, translational research and clinical trials support. This funding has in turn helped to grow the NSW cancer research sector.

Growing cancer research in NSW

  • We have seen a 75 per cent increase in the total amount of cancer research funding in NSW between 2004 and 2009 including more than $236 million invested in cancer research between 2007 and 2009.
  • We also employ clinical trials nurses and data managers at a Local Health level under a block funding agreement.
  • An Access Economics Report (2008) commissioned by the Cancer Institute NSW estimated that for every dollar spent on cancer research in NSW, the return in health benefits is around $3.43.
