The Cancer Institute NSW provides financial assistance to a number of organisations and programs each year to help them stage events, seminars and promotions that help to minimise the burden of cancer in the community.

We also sponsor educational programs that raise awareness about cancer in the community or that disseminate knowledge to key stakeholders about best practice relating to treating and caring for people with cancer.

Applying for Sponsorship

If you wish to submit a proposal for Cancer Institute NSW sponsorship,  simply download and complete the Sponsorship Initiative Submission form and follow the prompts.

If possible, please also provide some information on how your event, seminar or promotion aligns with the objectives of the NSW Cancer Plan 2011-15.

Events and initiatives supported in 2012

 

Radiation Oncology Club meetings - NSW Branch of Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZR) - 3 x meetings in 2012

These highly regarded and educational meetings occur three times each year and allow for valuable networking among professionals active in the field within NSW - promoting communication and networking among radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and radiation oncology medical physicists. They serve as a forum for discussing issues of education, training and research.

 

Lambton High Public School - School Sport Surfing Program - every wednesday throughout the year

Providing rash shirts for students participating in Lambton High School's Sport Surfing Program. By having the surf students in the rash shirts the School will be building on its existing sun safe kids promotion and when they are at the beach, students represent the school and the aim is to increase awareness of cancer and steps against prevention and early recognition.

World Lung Foundation - 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health pre-conference workshop "How to develop and implement an effective tobacco control mass media campaign" 19 March

Cancer Institute NSW has an international reputation for excellence in the development of anti-smoking mass media campaigns and as such the World Lung Foundation request their partnership in presenting this event.  The workshop will closely follow the format of the APACT preconference workshop that the two organisations co-sponsored in Sydney in October 2010.

 

COSA coordination of cancer care conference , Novotel, St Kilda Melbourne, 6-7 March

The Conference theme Towards New Horizons will inform on best practice in areas that increasingly impact on coordinated care, such as the unique needs of the elderly patient, survivorship, care coordination of adolescents and young adult patient. Professor Emma Ream, from Kings College London leads the Supportive Cancer Care Research Group providing strategic leadership for cancer and palliative nursing education and research in the UK.

Electronic Patient Imaging Conference 2012, Darling Harbour - 12 March

The goal of the symposium: "Real-time localisation and adaptation in Cancer Radiotherapy is to bring together the world's best scientists and clinicians in the area of real-time image-guided radiotherapy to forge the path from the current status to future widespread implementation.

Melanoma Institute NSW - March for Melanoma - 17 March

Melanoma is a major Australian health problem. It is the third most common cancer in men and women with over 10,000 cases per year in Australia.  The aim of this event is to raise awareness about melanoma in the 15-39 year age group. This is the inaugural "March for Melanoma" event in Sydney and the Melanoma Institute aims to make this a feature event in its annual calendar.

St George Hospital & Calvary Health care - 2nd Whole Person Care Symposium "Making a difference in the face of uncertainty" - 21-22 March

The 2nd Whole Person Care Symposium will build on the outstanding success of the Inaugural Symposium held in 2009 and an overwhelming demand from clinicians working with patients who have life threatening or terminal illnesses. The Symposium will again highlight the importance of whole person care for patients with life threatening illness, particularly for patients with malignancy.

 

Island Style Promotions - Malfunction Surf Festival - 21-25 March

The Malfunction is a surf event attracting participants and visitors that are active in outdoor activities. Through these activities and the associated lifestyles this is a group of people that  are at extreme risk to over exposure to the suns UV's and possible skin cancers.

 

HPMI bowel & lung cancer meeting - 2 June

Prevention and early detection will be a major focus for this event: "Cancer Day: A Portrait of Bowel and Lung Cancer". HPMI's GP focus is based on the fact that GPs are in a prime position to prevent and detect cancer. With over 2,200 doctors on the HPMI data base, a large attendance is anticipated.

Quit Education Services - seminar and group interventions - July 2011 to June 2012

An initiative to provide seminar and group intervention to community and NGO services referred from NSW Quitline and other bodies that were unable to afford fees for service. These interventions increase the chances of quitting smoking and maintaining cessation in populations wit high rates of smoking. It has been well established that brief intervention and evidence based group work substantially increase the likelihood of cessation and this service aims to address smoking behaviour in traditionally "hard to treat" populations.

 

Action on Smoking and Health Australia Pty Ltd (ASH) - development of  "Smokefree multi-unit housing: a guide and communication strategy for reducing SHS harm and exposure in homes. (January to June)

This proposal will reduce SHS (second hand smoke) exposure in multi-unit housing by raising awareness about the problem and solutions for resolving conflict over smokedrift. ASH has developed a guide that now needs a communications and implementation strategy including an evaluation plan. A review of the NSW Strata laws in the first half of 2012 provides an opportunity to improve the process and options for achieving smokefree housing.

 

Cancer screening awareness and promotion for Chinese-Australian community - community partnership program (Cannas Kwok) - final report June

The program will include a culturally and linguistically tailored education program delivered over four weeks which will include facilitated and supported access to clinical screening. The aims of the educational sessions are to inform Chinese people about the importance of cancer screening, address myths and misconceptions and address concerns they may have about participating in regular screening.

 

Australian & New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group (ANZUP) - Annual Scientific Meeting - Four points by Sheraton, Darling Harbour, Sydney, 15-17 July

ANZUP's 2012 ASM program will showcase: • State of the art presentations from leading international and Australian experts; • Up-to-date management and research for prostate and other genitourinary cancers; • Opportunities for researchers to present their research; • Clinical trial concept development workshop; • Overviews of current and planned ANZUP trials; • A comprehensive program for trainees covering all aspects of genitourinary cancers; • A Community Engagement forum; and • A Translational Workshop.

Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA) for the Australia & Asia Pacific clinical research development Workshop (ACORD) Workshop - 9-15 September

MOGA's ACORD Workshop provides invaluable training and mentoring in the clinical trials design for up to 60 cancer researchers in any oncology sub-specialty from the Asia Pacific region. The Workshop will have positive impacts on the training and professional skills of NSW oncologists leading to direct improvements in patient care, treatment and clinical trials outcomes that lead to better health outcomes.

 

Sydney Special Children's Christmas party - 30 November, Rosehill Gardens racecourse

The 2012 Sydney Special Children's Christmas Party, proudly supporting Make-A-Wish Australia, has a goal to provide in excess of 5,000 children with a day they will never forget.  The children come from four major groups: The terminally ill, the intellectually impaired, physically impaired and also the underprivileged who may be suffering from domestic violence or physical abuse.
