Key activities and projects

NSWOG Priority Project: Statewide breast minimum dataset

In 2007, the Cancer Institute NSW supported a project defined by each invited NSWOG as the priority activity to improving cancer care and control in their clinical area. The selected project was supported by the NSWOG membership, aligned to the Terms of Reference of the Group.

NSWOG Breast identified the need for a breast dataset extension to improve the provision of clinical care through the process of audit and review. The dataset that was endorsed was developed by the National Breast Cancer Centre (NBCC/NBOCC), based on the National Cancer Control Initiative (NCCI) dataset.

The Cancer Institute NSW engaged a data manager to pilot the NBCC (NBOCC) statewide breast minimum dataset extension in a one year cohort at Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS) and Lismore Base Hospital, North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS). The aim of this project was to assess the cost, feasibility and benefits of implementing the NBCC (NBOCC) dataset extension which complements the Minimum Dataset for Clinical Cancer Registration.

Synoptic Pathology Reporting

NSWOG Breast was among the four tumour stream NSWOGs that identified structured pathology as a high priority for improving clinical decision support. Collaborative projects have been established in this area, and more information is available on the Structured Pathology Reporting page of the Cancer Institute NSW site.
