NSWOG Upper GI has been meeting since September 2005. In mid-2007, the Group established a subcommittee for Hepatocellular Carcinoma, with the aim of documenting available data, current clinical care practices and outcomes for patients with primary liver cancer in NSW.

NSWOG Upper GI is chaired by Professor Ross Smith, surgeon, Royal North Shore Hospital.

Key activities and projects

In 2007, the Cancer Institute NSW supported a project defined by each invited NSWOG as the priority activity to improving cancer care and control in their clinical area. The selected project was supported by the NSWOG membership, aligned to the Terms of Reference of the Group.

NSWOG Priority Project: State wide survey of surgical treatment of oesophago-gastric and pancreatic cancer

The aim of the NSWOG Upper GI priority project, conducted through the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society (SUGSS), was to establish a website to act as an online database for collection of clinical information regarding patients with stomach and pancreatic cancers. The website will also act as a forum of surgeons, radiation oncologists and other medical staff, as well as a resource for patients and carers.

NSWOG Upper GI Draft Minimum Data Set Extension

NSWOG Upper GI has identified succinct dataset extensions as statewide standards to complement the core dataset with additional measures and indicators specific to tumour streams.

Liver Cancer Project

The Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) subcommittee of the NSWOG Upper GI initiated a project to document standard care pathways and variations in practice in the treatment of primary liver cancer in NSW. An international literature review has been completed, and a comprehensive survey of centres treating liver cancer in NSW will be undertaken.

Upper Gastro-intestinal Tract Cancer Forum - 29 October 2010

The Cancer Institute's NSW Oncology Group (NSWOG) Upper GI hosted a free multidisciplinary clinical forum for health professionals caring for patients with Upper GI cancer on 29 October 2010. The forum featured educational sessions presented by clinicians and professionals involved in all aspects of care throughout the patient journey. The day focussed on current treatment practices and highlighted best practice for care of patients with oesophageal, gastric, gallbladder, liver and pancreatic cancers.
