eviQEd

eviQEd is a Cancer Institute NSW educational program that uses eviQ content, providing cancer health professionals with online, blended courses that standardise and promote best clinical practice for the care of patients with cancer.

eviQEd educational courses:

  • are for cancer health professionals
  • promote safe practice
  • are evidence based
  • are flexible in delivery
  • are standardised to improve competency
  • support key national cancer education initiatives such as EdCaN and Cancer Learning

 

The Cancer Institute NSW recommends that eviQEd courses be incorporated within the health care organisation's staff professional development strategy. eviQEd courses are designed to be implemented locally. The educational programs are developed by the Cancer Institute NSW to meet the objectives of the Cancer Plan 2011 - 2015.

The aim of the course is to enable health professionals to administer and handle antineoplastic drugs and related waste safely and to promote best clinical practice for the care of patients with cancer. The course attracts CPD hours for participants and is provided free of charge.

The two versions of ADAC currently available are:

  • Adult Oncology
  • Adult Haematology

Upcoming module developments include:

  • Paediatric ADAC
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Care of community patients receiving antineoplastic drugs

ADAC consists of the following eight modules:

  • Module 1: Handling antineoplastic drugs and related waste safely
  • Module 2: Understanding how antineoplastic drugs work
  • Module 3: Reviewing prescriptions and protocols
  • Module 4: Educating the patient and carer
  • Module 5: Assessing patients
  • Module 6: Administering oral antineoplastic drugs
  • Module 7: Administering intravenous antineoplastic drugs
  • Module 8: Preventing and managing extravasation of antineoplastic drugs

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this program participants should be able to:

  1. Handle antineoplastic drugs and related waste safely
  2. Explain how antineoplastic drugs affect the cell
  3. Check the calculation of antineoplastic drugs doses
  4. Ensure safe prescription and checking requirements of antineoplastic drug prescriptions  have been met before administration
  5. Identify sources of information and support resources for all aspects of administering intravenous antineoplastic drugs
  6. Educate a patient and their carer about antineoplastic drugs
  7. Undertake a complete assessment and review of a patient prescribed antineoplastic drugs
  8. Administer oral antineoplastic drugs safely
  9. Administer antineoplastic drugs intravenously using correct procedure
  10. Administer antineoplastic vesicant drugs safely

Various tools are used to support the development of competence including:

  • eLearning resources and assessment quiz
  • face to face workshop and workshop materials
  • supervised clinical learning and competency assessment
