Stopping smoking

Tobacco smoking is the largest cause of preventable disease and death in NSW.

Quitting smoking at any time can improve your health. In NSW, free resources are available to help you on your quitting journey.

Tobacco smoking is the largest cause of preventable disease and death in NSW. Each year in NSW 46,335 hospitalisations and 5,460 deaths are attributed to smoking, but quitting smoking at any time can improve your health.

The Cancer Institute NSW develops anti-smoking campaigns, provides support services and implements projects to help reduce smoking across the state.

Why is quitting important?

Smoking increases the risk of many cancers – data in 2008 shows more than one in four male cancer deaths (28 per cent) and one in five (20 per cent) of all female cancer deaths could be attributed to smoking in NSW.

On average, smokers die around 10 years earlier than non-smokers.

Death rates in current smokers are around three times higher than those of people who had never smoked.

What you need to know

Smoking is very addictive and some smokers do need assistance to kick the habit for good.
