Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that starts in the membranes lining the chest or abdomen. It is more common in men and in people over the age of 65 years.
The two main types of mesothelioma are:
- pleural mesothelioma that occurs in the chest
- peritoneal mesothelioma that occurs in the abdomen.
Almost everyone who develops mesothelioma has been exposed to asbestos.
The Cancer Institute NSW recommends that all people with cancer have their care overseen by a multidisciplinary team (MDT).
