What is translational cancer research?

Translational cancer research, also termed ‘bench-to-bedside', aims to efficiently translate research findings from the laboratory into clinical practice for rapid impact on cancer treatment and outcomes.

The Cancer Institute NSW currently supports translational cancer research through Translational Program Grants, an Accelerated Translational Research Grant, and Translational Capacity Building Grants. These large grants support multi-disciplinary research teams to rapidly translate cancer research into clinical programs and policy.

Research giving hope to Australians with aggressive blood cancer

A new clinical trial will offer hope to Australians with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), who are currently unable to receive life-saving treatment due to old age or ill health.

Supported as part of a $11.75 million boost to cancer research from the Cancer Institute NSW, Professor John Pimanda at the University of New South Wales is leading a five-year, $3.75 million Translational Program Grant.

He says that while AML is most common in people over 65, there are currently limited treatment options available for them.

“We aim to identify and test new drug combinations in the laboratory which can then be offered to patients who are unfit for aggressive chemotherapy."
