Project Title: Risk of a new primary melanoma or other cancer after a diagnosis of melanoma in NSW

Lead researcher: Professor Anne Cust

Organisation: Melanoma Institute Australia and The Daffodil Centre, University of Sydney

The Project:

Melanoma is a major public health issue in Australia, and it is the most common cancer affecting young adult Australians, as well as the third most invasive cancer in Australia for both men and women. Patients with a personal history of melanoma have a higher risk of developing subsequent primary melanoma, and possibly some other cancers.

This study aims to estimate the risk of developing subsequent primary melanoma and other primary cancers after an initial diagnosis of invasive or in situ melanoma. We will estimate relative and absolute risks for people according to different patient and lesion factors, for different time periods, and for different types of cancers. We will also assess the impact on survival for people who develop multiple primary melanomas. The findings will help guide the follow-up for patients newly diagnosed with primary melanoma.
