NSW Quitline

The NSW Quitline 13 7848 (13 QUIT) is a confidential telephone information and advice service to help smokers quit smoking and stay quit. NSW Quitline counsellors are trained professionals who provide:

  • A free Quitline counselling program is available. Regular supportive calls from a counsellor are available as part of the program. Smokers who use the Quitline program and receive up to six calls, can double their change of successfully quitting.
  • A Quit Kit containing helpful information about quitting. The kits are available to order in English, Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Vietnamese.
  • An Aboriginal Quitline that provides an individually tailored and culturally sensitive service for Aboriginal callers.
  • Dedicated language lines in Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Vietnamese. Callers from other culturally diverse communities can call the Translating and Interpreter Service.
  • Support for family and friends of smokers.

Data coverage

NSW Quitline collects information on all clients that contact the service.

Data sources

NSW Quitline data is stored in a third party client information system. This system stores all client interactions with NSW Quitline.

Data availability

There are several types of information that can be requested from NSW Quitline. This includes:

  • NSW Quitline referrals, enrolments and calls
  • NSW Quitline  de-identified unit record data

Data are available for the following periods on request:
Most recent year: 2018 (as at December)
Next release: Mid–to2019 (data are released every six months)
Historical series: Feb 2016 –to2018

Data elements

The data available from NSW Quitline include information on:

  • Referrals
  • Calls (inbound and outbound)
  • Enrolments
  • Call outcomes

Data quality

The minimum dataset is currently under review to ensure that it captures all stages of the client pathway. Work is also being done to improve business rules/logics in the system in order to eliminate errors in data entry – thus improving data quality.
