Evidence to Practice Grants

Through Evidence to Practice grants, health and community organisations working in cancer control can receive funding to implement initiatives for those at high-risk of cancer.

This program supports projects that are embedding evaluated research into practice, or those projects which are generating evidence where a gap exists.

Tobacco Control

Far West LHD Building capacity and partnerships to reduce smoking in pregnancy The aim of this project is to build staff capacity and partnerships to reduce the rates of smoking in pregnant Aboriginal and non-Aborginal women in a sustainable way by engaging women before pregnancy, during antenatal and postnatal visits, at childbirth, and for ongoing follow-up at Child and Family Health Clinics and GP practices. It builds on the brief intervention and Nicotine Replacement Therapy provided by services, but provides a more holistic model including motivational interviewing and follow up in acknowledgment that additonal psycho-social support is required for sustained smoking cessation. $100,000
Health Promotion Service – South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Tobacco control for the Arabic-speaking community in St George LGA This project is a joint initiative between SESLHD Population and Planning Directorate (Health Promotion Service), Primary and Ambulatory Care Service (Multicultural Health Service and Community Health Service) and South Eastern Sydney Medicare Local.
The intervention model consists of; addressing knowledge gaps in tobacco harms and cessation services through media promotion and community events; strengthening
partnerships with community leaders to motivate community call for actions; conducting a
feasibility study to include tobacco cessation into an integrated model of care in clinical services by piloting smoking brief intervention and provision of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to women (pre and post natal) and women accessing the Pap test service as well as their household members in the St George area.

ACON Tobacco control project targeting lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women The project will build the evidence-base regarding the types of interventions and messaging that are likely to be effective in this target audience. A survey and focus groups with LBQ women will be conducted to understand why LBQ women take up smoking, motivations to continue/quit, and the barriers that they face when trying to quit. Following this, a social-marketing and public education campaign will be implemented using print material, social and mainstream media, online interventions and attendance at community events to encourage LBQ women smokers to quit. $100,000

 

Cervical and Breast Screening

Multicultural Health Communication Services BreastScreen promotion in Sri Lankan and Indian women in NSW: engaging community, media, research and health services This project will apply a multi-faceted approach involving media, community engagement, community champions, bilingual talks, culturally relevant resources and group bookings to increase awareness and encourage Sri Lankan and Indian women, and their communities, in NSW to attend breast screening services. Bowel Screening

Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District Bowel preparation: an intervention targeting patient factors to improve the quality of bowel preparation, to increase the efficiency of colonoscopy services after a positive faecal occult blood test The aim of the project is to identify patient factors which impact bowel preparation resulting in an incomplete colonoscopy, address the modifiable factors and to demonstrate a reduction in sub-optimal bowel preparation as a result of the intervention. Improvements in colonoscopy completion rates have the potential to improve waiting times, efficiency and effectiveness of the colonoscopy service. A retrospective audit of colonoscopies performed following a positive Faecal Occult Blood test over a 12 month period will be undertaken. Following this, an endoscopic blinded randomised control study to examine the effects of additional patient education and support on the quality of bowel preparation and patient satisfaction. $69,000

2011

Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Clinical Training Fellowships

The Cancer Institute NSW is supporting the development of highly qualified cancer specialists through its Clinical Training Fellowship Program. An independent one-off stream for 2012 will fund positions for oncology specialists (and those nearing completion of qualifications in oncology); to work specifically with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15 to 24 years with cancer.

This Program will support such cancer professionals for one year (1.0 FTE), to enhance their clinical skills, expertise and understanding of the needs of adolescents and young adults with cancer, as well as establish links between paediatric and adult cancer services.
