Evidence to Practice Grants
Through Evidence to Practice grants, health and community organisations working in cancer control can receive funding to implement initiatives for those at high-risk of cancer.
This program supports projects that are embedding evaluated research into practice, or those projects which are generating evidence where a gap exists.

| Health Promotion Service – South Eastern Sydney Local Health District | Tobacco control for the Arabic-speaking community in St George LGA | This project is a joint initiative between SESLHD Population and Planning Directorate (Health Promotion Service), Primary and Ambulatory Care Service (Multicultural Health Service and Community Health Service) and South Eastern Sydney Medicare Local. The intervention model consists of; addressing knowledge gaps in tobacco harms and cessation services through media promotion and community events; strengthening partnerships with community leaders to motivate community call for actions; conducting a feasibility study to include tobacco cessation into an integrated model of care in clinical services by piloting smoking brief intervention and provision of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to women (pre and post natal) and women accessing the Pap test service as well as their household members in the St George area. |

| ACON | Tobacco control project targeting lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women | The project will build the evidence-base regarding the types of interventions and messaging that are likely to be effective in this target audience. A survey and focus groups with LBQ women will be conducted to understand why LBQ women take up smoking, motivations to continue/quit, and the barriers that they face when trying to quit. Following this, a social-marketing and public education campaign will be implemented using print material, social and mainstream media, online interventions and attendance at community events to encourage LBQ women smokers to quit. | $100,000 |

The Cancer Institute NSW is supporting the development of highly qualified cancer specialists through its Clinical Training Fellowship Program. An independent one-off stream for 2012 will fund positions for oncology specialists (and those nearing completion of qualifications in oncology); to work specifically with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15 to 24 years with cancer. This Program will support such cancer professionals for one year (1.0 FTE), to enhance their clinical skills, expertise and understanding of the needs of adolescents and young adults with cancer, as well as establish links between paediatric and adult cancer services. |
