2023 Research Equipment Grants Funded

Find out more about the recipients of the 2023 Research Equipment Grants (REGs) and their research projects.

The Cancer Institute NSW Research Equipment Grant ensures that the state has world class infrastructure to accelerate cancer research and realise clinical benefits.

This scheme will support research infrastructure where there is a clearly demonstrated need and where the equipment will substantially improve research productivity.

2023 Grant Recipient

Professor Alexander Swarbrick

Grantee: Professor Alexander Swarbrick

Administering Institution: Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Grant Title: The 10X Genomics Xenium platform for advanced spatial analysis of solid tumours

Funding (excl.GST): $899,048

"Spatially resolved transcriptomics" (ST) technology allows us to see, in extreme detail, the molecular biology of cells within diseased tissue. This ground-breaking technology was named "method of the year" in 2020 by Nature Methods. It will transform our understanding of diseases and identify new opportunities for personalised cancer treatment. This proposal seeks to make the technology accessible to researchers in NSW, to maintain internationally competitive R&D and improve patient outcomes.

This equipment grant will be used to acquire a cutting-edge instrument called the 10X Genomics Xenium ST platform. This technology can detect more than 1,000 mRNA species and up to 30 proteins in tissues. It also provides exceptional resolution using optical microscopy.

This proposal aligns with the NSW Cancer Plan goal of increasing cancer survival by identifying new therapeutic targets for translation and improved patient outcomes.
