Tools and resources to deliver improved cancer outcomes in multicultural communities

Tools and resources to deliver improved cancer outcomes in multicultural communities

We have developed a suite of tools and resources to support health service planning and service delivery that is safe, high quality, and culturally responsive to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The resources enable equity-first lens to decision making, investment and monitoring, which is critical to improving their health outcomes.

Why did we develop these resources?

The NSW Cancer Plan aims to bring together key stakeholders across the NSW health system and community to work together to reduce the burden of cancers in NSW.

Cancer affects multicultural communities differently

The NSW Cancer Plan acknowledges that some multicultural (or CALD – culturally and linguistically diverse) communities:

  • have a higher incidence of cancer
  • have a higher prevalence of cancer-related risk factors (e.g. smoking)
  • are less likely to use screening or cancer support services, so they may experience poorer outcomes during and after cancer treatment
  • vary in their knowledge, awareness and beliefs about cancer, its causes and treatments.

Planning is essential for effective and sustainable service delivery and engagement of CALD communities to improve their cancer outcomes.

These resources act as a system enabling tool to assist people undertaking multicultural planning in government and other organisations.
