Project Title: Analysis of Breslow thickness and survival in patients with thin melanomas

Lead researcher: Professor Anne Cust

Organisation: Melanoma Institute Australia and The Daffodil Centre, University of Sydney

The Project:

Currently 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm are used as Breslow thickness thresholds for melanoma staging of thin melanomas, however there is some contention around what the optimal cut-point is. In addition, the incidence of melanoma-death compared to non-melanoma-death is understudied. A graphical representation of the two incidence rates within the following thickness categories (<0.8, 0.8-1.0, 1.1-2.0, 2.1-4.0, >4.0 mm) and over time (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years) will be provided.

Results from this analysis will help to show whether a 0.7 mm or 0.8 mm Breslow thickness threshold may be more appropriate for categorisation of high and low risk of death from melanoma in patients with thin lesions and will depict the long-term incidence of melanoma-death and non-melanoma death. These more detailed survival analyses will provide information that will help clinicians discuss the risks and benefits of various monitoring schedules, investigations, and treatments with their patients. This is particularly important in the rapidly changing field of new systemic therapies.
