Project Title: The impact of cancer diagnosis on life expectancy in NSW

Lead researcher: Professor Karen Canfell

Organisation: The Daffodil Centre, University of Sydney

The Project:

Comparing cancer patients’ life expectancy with that of the general population provides a straightforward measure of the burden of cancer on the population of interest. Previous studies reported a disproportionate cancer burden in terms of loss of life expectancy (LOLE) among cancer patients with low socioeconomic status (SES). However, no study has quantified the LOLE among all cancer patients in New South Wales (NSW) and examined whether any disparities exist by SES.

This study aims to quantify the disparities in the LOLE due to a cancer diagnosis by area-level SES in NSW, for all cancers and for the five most common cancer types by sex. The findings will have implications for improving outcomes and informing further research and policy.
