The Project:
Following a primary invasive melanoma diagnosis, a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) may be recommended to establish if there has been metastatic spread to the lymph nodes. A study conducted in NSW in 2006 found uptake of SLNB was low with only 45% of eligible patients receiving a SLNB despite clinical practice guideline recommendations.
This study aims to provide data on the current rates of SLNB in NSW, and changes in uptake over time, and on the factors that influence uptake. This information is required to inform service provision for melanoma patients, to understand the determinants that influence adherence to current guideline recommendations, and to guide health policy decisions regarding melanoma management.
