Data and research governance

Effective data governance ensures the Cancer Institute NSW data assets are valued, protected and used to support our work in cancer control.

Our data strategy vision

To improve cancer outcomes and lessen the impact of cancer for all people of NSW and the NSW health system through information, knowledge and insights out of data and system engagement.

The Cancer Institute NSW is committed to raising awareness, knowledge, and use of the Institute's considerable data assets, while fostering an open and transparent data culture to inform the management of health services and high-quality research whilst protecting the privacy of the people of NSW.

Our data governance structure

We have implemented and maintain a robust data governance policy and process as this is crucial to ensure:

  • strategic alignment of the Cancer Institute NSW data assets to the NSW Cancer Plan
  • compliance with relevant legislation, policies, procedures and standards
  • confidence in the data used to inform decisions
  • effective assurance and control of data management processes
  • formalised roles and responsibilities
  • protection of the data through documented policies and procedures, and ongoing communication, education and monitoring.
